UNION, N.J. (March 28, 2007) – Senior midfielder Mark Bielicky (Bridgewater, N.J.) became the all-time leader for career goals and tied the school record for career points all in one game as the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse team posted a 16-6 victory over Kean University on Wednesday in Union, N.J. Bielicky finished the game with two goals and three assists as the Ducks improved to 6-2 (4-0 Skyline Conference) on the year.
In four years at Stevens, Bielicky has amassed 144 goals and 52 assists for a total of 196 points. Former standout Brian Lalli (Cranbury, N.J) had 142 goals and 54 assists (196 points) from 2001-04. Bielicky will have a chance to break Lalli’s all-time scoring record in the Ducks’ next game on Saturday against Maritime College at 1 p.m.
During Wednesday’s win over the Cougars (5-2, 1-1 Skyline), Stevens jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Bielicky opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 2:25 into the game. That goal moved him into first place on the Ducks’ all-time list for career goals.
Less than two minutes later, junior attack J.R. Oreskovich (San Diego, Calif.) tallied an even-strength goal off a pass from sophomore defender Skylar Wilson (Long Valley, N.J.). Bielicky added his second goal of the game a mere 45 seconds later to extend the margin to 3-0.
Senior attack Patrick Bailey (Manassas, Va.), junior midfielder Alex Richards (Beaverton, Ore.), senior midfielder Joe Van Sickle (Amherst, N.H.) and sophomore midfielder Jaeke Donahue (Tiverton, R.I.) added goals in the final eight minutes of the period as the Ducks pulled away. Stevens went on to out-score Kean 3-2 in the second quarter to carry at 10-2 lead into halftime.
Freshman attack Josh Holmes (North Kingstown, R.I.) led the Ducks with three goals. Bailey had two goals and one assist. Van Sickle, Richards and Donahue finished with two goals apiece. Oreskovich added a goal and three assists in the victory.
Senior defender Steven Suggs (Durham, N.C.) won 12 of 14 faceoffs on the evening. Senior long-stick midfielder Shane Crossen (New Milford, Conn.) led the Ducks with seven ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Jack Dunderdale (Ridgefield, Conn.) picked up his sixth win of the season by making nine saves in 40 minutes of action.
For Kean, senior attack Steve Gill (Patchogue, N.Y.) totaled two goals. Junior midfielder Kyle Huff (West Caldwell, N.J.) added a goal and four ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Dave Nichols (Florham Park, N.J.) took the loss as he allowed all 16 goals while making 15 saves.
For the game, Stevens out-shot Kean 44-28. The Ducks owned a 39-26 advantage in ground balls. Stevens won 19 of 23 faceoffs and converted 12 of 13 clears (92.3 percent) overall.
