ROCHESTER, N.Y. (April 1, 2007) – The top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology’s men’s volleyball team earned a 3-0 (30-28, 30-24, 30-27) sweep over third-seeded Eastern Mennonite University in the championship match of the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Men’s Volleyball Championship on Sunday afternoon. The Ducks did not drop any games during the entire tournament and improved to 31-6 on the season with today’s victory. Stevens will represent the NECVA in the national tournament
Senior setter/outside hitter Michael Schulte (San Bernardino, Calif.) was named the NECVA Tournament Most Valuable Player. Schulte was joined on the All-Tournament Team by senior middle/outside hitter Scott Stoner (Wantagh, N.Y.) and sophomore middle hitter Andrew Cranford (Bel Air, Md.).
Stoner led Stevens with 12 kills and added four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Tom Bochicchio (Saint James, N.Y.), senior middle hitter Will Foley (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Cranford all chipped in with eight kills apiece. Foley led the team with nine blocks, while Cranford added five in three games. Junior outside hitter/libero Brian Carlson (West Seneca, N.Y.) led the team with eight digs. Schulte totaled 38 assists on the day. As a team, Stevens tallied 16 team blocks.
Junior outside Brandon Ratliff (Phoenix, Ariz.) led Eastern Mennonite with 17 kills and three blocks. Junior outside hitter/middle blocker Ethan Fry (Guatemala City, Guatemala) was second on the team with 12 kills. Senior libero Ryan Detweiler (Telford, Pa.) led the team with seven digs, while junior setter Benjamin Yoder (Lederach, Pa.) led the team with 41 assists.
Stevens out-hit Eastern Mennonite .387 (45-14-80) to .118 (44-32-102).
Stevens will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts New Jersey Institute of Technology at 7 p.m.
