HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (April 14, 2007) – Four freshman combined for 14 goals and six assists as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team evened its record at 6-6 on the year with a convincing 19-6 victory over Centenary College on Saturday in Hackettstown, N.J. The win pushed the Ducks’ record to 3-1 in Skyline Conference play this season. The Cyclones fell to 3-6 overall (0-5 Skyline) as they suffered their fifth loss in a row.
Freshman midfielder Alyssa Pigott (Jobstown, N.J.) totaled five goals, one assist, four ground balls and three draw controls in the victory. Freshman midfielder Kara Borzillo (Mount Laurel, N.J.) finished with four goals. Freshman attack Katie Lalli (Princeton Junction, N.J.) registered four goals, three assists and two ground balls. Freshman midfielder Fionuala Quinn (Succasunna, N.J.) added a goal and two assists.
Stevens also received a lift from junior attack Liz Mather (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), who had two goals, six assists, two ground balls and two draw controls against Centenary. Sophomore attack Dana Perriello (Pittsburgh, Pa.) chipped in with two goals.
Meanwhile, sophomore goalkeeper Grace Sack (Cazenovia, N.J.) came off the bench to post a shut-out in the second half as she stopped all nine shots on goal that she faced. Sack took over for junior goalkeeper Stephanie Linder (Eatontown, N.J.), who made three saves for the Ducks.
Junior midfielder Clare Johnson (Morristown, N.J.) led the way for the Cyclones with three goals and an assist. She also contributed four ground balls and four draw controls. Junior attack Nicole Becker (Randolph, N.J.) had a goal and three assists in the loss. Senior goalkeeper Laura Davis (Vernon, N.J.) registered 12 saves in net.
Leading 3-2 with less than 22 minutes remaining in the first half, Stevens scored five goals in the span of 3:12 to open an 8-2 lead. Borzillo scored twice in a 30-second span to get the Ducks going. Centenary would not go away though as the Cyclones scored four of the final six goals of the first half to close to within 10-6 at the break.
Stevens began the second half by scoring three times in the opening three minutes. Once again, Borzillo started things with her third goal of the game. Pigott followed with a goal off a free-position shot to extend the Ducks’ lead to 12-6. Perriello gave Stevens a seven-goal cushion with her second goal of the day with 27:14 remaining. Pigott scored three more times in the second half as the Ducks out-scored Centenary 9-0 after intermission.
For the game, Stevens owned a 35-25 edge in shots. The Ducks were 15-for-21 (71.4 percent) in clearing attempts. The Cyclones converted on just 12 of 23 (52.2 percent) clears overall. Stevens was 3-for-6 on free-position shots while Centenary finished 0-for-7 on the day.
Coming up on Sunday, the Ducks will take on the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 11 a.m. That match will be played at Columbia University’s Baker Field in New York, N.Y. Sunday’s game could go a long way towards determining which team finishes in second place in the Skyline Conference this season. Stevens is in third place at the moment. Mount Saint Vincent (4-5) currently occupies second place with a league mark of 2-0.
