CORTLAND, N.Y. (April 21, 2007) – Junior attack Ryan Heath (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) registered five goals and an assist as defending national champion SUNY Cortland posted a 20-9 victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse team on Saturday in Cortland, N.Y. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the ninth-ranked Ducks as they fell to 12-3 on the year. The 16th-ranked Red Dragons improved to 9-4 with the win.
Junior attack J.R. Oreskovich (San Diego, Calif.) led Stevens with two goals and two assists. Sophomore attack Matt Keating (Chatham, N.J.) also had two goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Matt Althauser (Bellevue, Wash.) finished with two goals as well. Senior midfielder Mark Bielicky (Bridgewater, N.J.) added a goal and two assists in the loss. Senior goalkeeper Jack Dunderdale (Ridgefield, Conn.) made 13 saves for the Ducks.
For Cortland, senior attack Mike Felice (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) totaled three goals and four assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Robinson (Alexandria, Va.) stopped seven shots and allowed four goals in 45 minutes of action.
Junior midfielder Adam Hyde (West Seneca, N.Y.) scored the first two goals of the game for the Red Dragons, who extended the margin to 3-0 late in the first quarter. Bielicky got the Ducks on the board with 23 seconds left in the period as Stevens closed to within 3-1.
Leading 4-2 in the second quarter, Cortland scored five straight goals to open a 9-2 cushion. The Red Dragons led 9-3 at the break and extended their margin to 17-4 after three quarters.
Stevens will kick off the Skyline Conference Tournament on Wednesday as the Ducks host a semifinal game at 4 p.m. The opponent for that contest has not been determined. Wednesday’s game will be carried live at www.duckcast.com.
