OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 22, 2007) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team was defeated by SUNY Old Westbury in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers defeated the Ducks 6-5 in the first game and 5-1 in game two. With the losses, Stevens falls to 13-17 overall, while Old Westbury improved to 14-14 overall. Centenary College, Manhattanville College and Old Westbury are now all tied for first in the conference with 10-4 marks, while Farmingdale State College and Stevens are tied for fourth at 9-5.
In the first game, Stevens scored first in the fifth inning, but Old Westbury answered back with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the score 1-1. The Panthers rallied with five runs in the eighth inning to take a 6-1 advantage. The Ducks mounted a come back in the ninth, but fell one run short.
Sophomore Joe Gunshor (Ridgefield, Conn.) led Stevens offensively as he finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J.) totaled two RBIs in the game. Junior Mike Ivey (Budd Lake, N.J.) gave up four runs on four hits and suffered the loss for the Ducks.
In game two, Stevens scored first again in the second inning, but that would be their only run of the game. Old Westbury scored three runs in the third and two in the fifth to earn the victory.
Senior Eric McCormick (Edison, N.J.) tallied a hit and the lone RBI for Stevens in the game. Senior Jim Waterman (Mullica Hill, N.J.) picked up the loss on the mound.
Stevens will be back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Mount Saint Mary College in a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
