POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (September 26, 2007) – The Vassar College women's soccer team jumped out to a quick lead against Stevens Institute of Technology and never looked back as the Brewers recorded a 3-0 victory on Wednesday at Prentiss Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The loss was the second in a row for the Ducks, who fell to 5-3-1 overall. Vassar is now 4-2-1 on the season.
Sophomore midfielder Molly Mackin (North Bennington, Vt.) got the Brewers on the board first in the sixth minute with her first goal of the season. After maneuvering around two defenders in front of the net, Mackin lined a shot over the outstretched hands of sophomore goalkeeper Sherri Rosenberg.
The Brewers managed another goal in the first half off the foot of freshman midfielder Sarah Strange (Cypress, Texas). In the 29th minute, junior midfielder Nola Solomon (Washington, D.C.) sent a direct kick towards the net. Rosenberg came out to make the initial save but was unable to corral the ball as Strange chipped the rebound into the open net.
Sophomore midfielder/back Laura Smith (Toledo, Ohio) added some extra insurance in the 57th minute with her first collegiate goal. Freshman forward Jordan Hynes (Glenview, Ill.) assisted on the play, out-running Rosenberg to a loose ball and then tapping it back to Smith. Smith's shot bounced off the goalpost but dropped back into the net before Rosenberg could knock it out.
Vassar junior goalkeeper Anne Hutchinson (Tampa, Fla.) had six saves and recorded her second consecutive shutout. Rosenberg made nine stops for the Ducks, who were out-shot 20-11 in the game. The Brewers also owned a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
Coming up on Saturday, Stevens will be back in action as it takes on Elmira College at 1 p.m. That contest will be carried live at www.Empire8.tv.
