HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 29, 2007) – On the same day that the 2002 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team was honored at halftime for reaching the NCAA Tournament five years ago, the 2007 installment of the Ducks got back to their winning ways as they halted a brief two-game losing streak with a 4-0 win over Elmira College on Saturday at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. With the victory, Stevens improved to 6-3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8.
Sophomore midfielder/forward Leslie Kallberg opened the scoring in the ninth minute as she blocked a clearing attempt by the Soaring Eagles and beat senior goalkeeper Meaghan Doherty (Albany, N.Y.). Senior back/midfielder Cristina Fulgencio staked the Ducks to a 2-0 lead with 26:09 gone by when she tapped in a cross from the left wing off the foot of freshman midfielder Erica Risch.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Risch tallied her second goal of the season as she received a pass on the left wing from senior midfielder Siena York-Carr and worked her way into scoring position before ripping a shot from inside the box. Freshman forward/midfielder Kara Pepe capped the scoring for the Ducks in the 88th minute when she touched home the ball after her initial shot on a breakaway was saved by freshman goalkeeper Stacy Krom (Amsterdam, N.Y.).
Freshman goalkeeper Jenn Pontier earned her first career win while playing 83:41 in net for Stevens. Pontier, who was relieved by sophomore goalkeeper Sherri Rosenberg, only had to make one save in the contest. Doherty and Krom combined to make eight stops for the Soaring Eagles (0-9, 0-3 Empire 8).
The Ducks out-shot Elmira 35-4 in the game. Stevens also owned a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Coming up on Wednesday, the Ducks will host Drew University at 7 p.m.
