ALFRED, N.Y. (January 19, 2008) – Senior guard Waleed Farid posted 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists as the 15th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team recorded a 60-49 victory over Alfred University on Saturday at the McLane Center in Alfred, N.Y. With the win, the Ducks improved to 13-2 on the season and 8-2 in the Empire 8. The Saxons dropped to 1-14 (0-6 Empire 8) with the loss.
Senior forward Tim Williams tallied 10 points and five rebounds in the win. Junior guard Anthony Passalacqua had nine points and five rebounds. Junior guard Virgil Gray finished with nine points, four rebounds and four steals. Sophomore guard George Greco added eight points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Alfred was led by freshman forward Ellis Walsh (Penfield, N.Y.), who totaled 11 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Jared Patt (Nelson, Pa.) chipped in with 10 points.
Leading 13-11 midway through the first half, Stevens scored seven of the next nine points to go on top by seven (20-13) following a three-pointer from the wing by junior guard Michael Baker. Farid scored the first four points in the run for the Ducks. Stevens led 27-21 at the break.
With less than 13 minutes remaining in the game, the Ducks scored six straight points to go up 39-27 after sophomore guard/forward Matt Higgins knocked down a pair of free throws. Stevens extended the lead to 14 points on three separate occasions.
The Saxons would not go away though as they closed to within 53-46 on a pair of free throws by Patt with 1:54 left on the clock. The Ducks made 4-of-5 free throws in the final 42 seconds. Passalacqua was 4-for-4 in that stretch. Farid came up with a big steal and lay-up to help seal the victory.
For the game, Stevens shot 39.6 percent (19-for-48) from the floor. Alfred made 14-of-59 field-goal attempts (23.7 percent) overall. The Ducks forced the Saxons into committing 21 turnovers.
Stevens will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts Drew University at 7 p.m. The Ducks will play at Elmira College on January 27 at 4 p.m.
