ALFRED, N.Y. (January 20, 2008) - On Saturday afternoon, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team established a new individual game record for made three-pointers with 10 to roll past Alfred University by a final score of 83-29 at the McLane Center in Alfred, N.Y. With the win, the Ducks improved to 14-3 overall and 10-0 in conference action. As for the Saxons, they fell to 1-11 and 0-6 in league play.
Trailing 6-5 with just under 17 minutes remaining in the first half, Stevens put together a 20-2 run over an eight-minute stretch to take a 26-7 lead with 9:14 to go. Senior forward Dora Enright and junior guard Dani Dudek combined to score 12 points in the streak.
Shortly thereafter, Alfred cut the deficit to 26-10 on a three-ball by sophomore guard Lisa Button (Troupsburg, N.Y.) with 8:34 left. However, the Ducks out-scored the Saxons by a 29-7 count in the last eight minutes to grab hold of a 49-17 advantage heading into the locker room. During that time, Stevens rattled off a 12-1 burst in a span of 5:01 to go ahead by 29 points (40-11) with 3:17 left. Dudek notched six points during the run, while freshman forward Cindy Hassler capped it off with one of her team-high three trifectas on the day.
In the latter stanza, the rout by Stevens continued. Leading 58-26 with 13:10 remaining, the Ducks went on a 15-0 run in a period of 5:51 to clutch a 61-26 lead with 7:00 left. Senior guard Jean Matusiak started the streak with a three and ended it with back-to-back lay-ups.
Stevens shot 47.8 percent (32-for-67) from the field, 40.0 percent (10-for-25) from three-point range and 64.3 percent (9-for-14) from the free-throw line. Enright finished with a game-high 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting. She also grabbed six rebounds. Dudek nearly registered a triple-double with 15 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and three steals. Armstrong added eight points and nine boards.
The Saxons shot 17.0 percent (9-of-53) from the floor, 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from downtown and 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from the charity stripe. Button tallied nine points and four rebounds, while junior guard Melanie Jackson (Andover, N.Y.) compiled six points, four boards and a pair of steals.
The Ducks return to the court next Sunday when they travel to Elmira, N.Y. to wrap up their three-game road trip at Elmira College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
