NEW YORK, N.Y. (January 29, 2008) – Baruch College went 10-for-12 from the foul line in overtime as the Bearcats recorded a 75-71 win over the 17th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team on Tuesday evening in New York, N.Y. The loss dropped the Ducks to 15-3 on the season. Baruch ran its record to 9-12 with the victory.
Senior forward Tim Williams paced Stevens with 23 points and 11 rebounds. He made 10-of-18 field-goal attempts in the contest. Senior guard Waleed Farid added 13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and six steals. Sophomore guard George Greco contributed seven assists in the loss.
Sophomore forward George Kunkel (Glendale, N.Y.) led the Bearcats with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman guard Tammer Farid (Woodside, N.Y.), who is the younger brother of Waleed, recorded 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Despite being held without a made field goal, Tammer shot 14-for-16 from the foul line.
Trailing by as many as eight points in the second half, Stevens forced overtime when junior guard Virgil Gray scored on a lay-up with 1:45 left in regulation. Baruch ran off a 6-1 run in the span of 2:03 at the outset of overtime to open a 67-62 lead on a lay-up by Kunkel.
The Ducks trimmed the margin to 69-67 on a three-point play by Williams with 1:47 remaining. Stevens also closed to within two points (73-71) on a basket by Gray with four seconds to go. Tammer Farid sealed the Bearcats' victory by making two free throws with three seconds left on the clock.
Baruch out-rebounded Stevens 46-39. The Bearcats made 79.3 percent (23-for-29) of their free throws. The Ducks shot 54.2 percent (13-for-24) at the line.
Stevens will return to action on Friday when it hosts Nazareth College at 8 p.m. That contest will be carried live at www.Empire8.tv. All fans in attendance are asked to wear black in support of “Blackout Night.”
