GLASSBORO, N.J. (October 1, 2008) – On Wednesday night in Glassboro, N.J., the No.20 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team fell to No. 9 Rowan University by a score of 2-0. The Ducks were able to play even hockey in the first half, going punch-for-punch with the Profs, but in the second half Rowan took control and scored two goals to end Stevens' nine-game win streak to open the 2008 season.
The Ducks controlled the first eight-plus minutes of action, getting two penalty corners and were looking up to the task against a strong Rowan (6-2 overall, 2-0 NJAC) squad.
In the first half, neither team could get much going towards the goal as Rowan ended the half with a 4-2 lead in shots and a 3-2 advantage on penalty corners. The Profs had the best chance of the first stanza, but Stevens goalie Stephanie Smith made a nice kick-save with 1:30 left.
Stevens (9-1 overall, 1-0 Empire 8) was able to control possession in the midfield as the Ducks made several nice runs into the Rowan circle but were unable to get a clean look.
The second half began similar to the first in that neither team could seize control and get much going on offense, but Rowan started to gain control at the 25-minute mark.
After a slew of corners, the Profs got on the board at 58:04 when Amanda Greene (Thorofare, N.J.) was able to find net after a scrum in front. The play began after a corner and the goal was unassisted.
A little less than seven minutes later, Rowan scored again. Like the first goal, the play was off a broken corner, and this time it was Kiley Graham (Williamstown, N.J.). She was able to put in a Jen Lipnickey (Chester, N.J.) rebound.
Smith made five saves in the loss for Stevens. She falls to 1-1 on the season. Lisa Apt (Mays Landing, N.J.) made one save and earned the win in net for Rowan.
The Profs outshot the Ducks 18-2 overall and 14-0 in the second half. They also held a 10-2 advantage on penalty corners.
“I thought we did a nice job in the first half maintaining possession and pressure,” Head Coach Jessica Reed said. “The final score doesn't reflect the intense, well-played game it really was.”
Stevens will return to action when they host Empire 8 rival Ithaca College at the De Baun Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
