HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 4, 2008) – The No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team bounced back from its only loss of the season with a strong, 3-0 win over Empire 8 rival Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex. The Ducks were led by two goals from junior Kara Borzillo. Freshman Mallory Swanson added a goal and an assist as Stevens moved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the Empire 8.
It was evident from the start that Stevens' loss to No. 9 Rowan was a distant memory as the Ducks started the game deep in the Ithaca zone. They got several early penalty corners but could not convert until the 17:53 mark of the first half. Swanson found Borzillo with a nice lead into the left side of the circle and the junior team leader in goals and points beat the goalie in a one-on-one situation.
Less than one minute later, the Ducks scored again. This time Swanson was able to lift a shot over Ithaca keeper Courtney Dowell (Massapequa, N.Y.) after a scrum in front of the net. It was her fourth goal of the season.
Stevens ended the first half with a 9-0 advantage in shots and an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Senior Stephanie Smith got the win in goal for Stevens. She had a nice afternoon, making five saves.
The final Duck goal came from Borzillo. Senior tri-captain Allison Shields ripped a shot that Dowell was able to stop, but Borzillo put home the rebound from the ground. Shields was credited with her third assist of 2008 as Borzillo put in her league-high 15th goal of the season.
The Ducks outshot Ithaca 15-6 and out-cornered the Bombers by a 13-6 margin.
Once again, the Stevens defense and midfield played phenomenal hockey. Any time a Bomber attacker got in the Stevens zone, the chance was quickly thwarted by a host of Stevens defenders.
The Ducks will look to get on another winning streak when they host Drew University on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on www.Empire8.tv and it will be a Duck Country game.
