Women's Tennis Picks up Eighth-Straight Win with a 9-0 Victory over Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. (October 4, 2008) – Freshman Mine Bese earned her eighth singles win of the season as she helped the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team to its eighth straight victory of the year with a 9-0 shutout over Elmira College. Bese dropped just one game in her match against junior Alia Pyros (Shavertown, Pa.) as she upended the third-year player in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.

Stevens returned to its usual form having swept in doubles. The senior-sophomore combination of Whitney Bender and Allyson Kingman recorded their ninth win of the season (9-2), in an 8-2 victory over sophomore Rebecca Kingman (Hamilton, N.J.) and senior Emily Talbot (Cazenovia, N.Y.) at No. 1 singles. The tandem of freshman Nicole Portner and sophomore Kendra Appleheimer shutdown junior Desiree Calderella (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Pyros, by an 8-0 count at second doubles. At No. 3 doubles, freshman Morgan Scalzi and junior Natalie Schloeder took down first-year players Briana Palmiero (Rochester, N.Y.) and Alexandra Putney (Dundee, N.Y.) by an 8-6 decision.

At No. 1 singles, Bender defeated Talbot in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Kingman squared off against her twin sister Rebecca Kingman at second singles as Allyson won the sibling rivalry 6-0, 6-4. At third singles, Portner upended Palmiero 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the match as Bese took down Pyros 6-0, 6-1. Appleheimer defeated senior Danielle Oaxaca (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, while Scalzi took care of Putney in a 6-3, 6-2 decision.

The Ducks return to action tomorrow when they take on conference rival Ithaca College at 10 a.m. in Ithaca, N.Y.
