Women's Basketball Downs Rutgers-Newark, 59-30

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 19, 2008) – Junior forward Brittany Fuller posted a game-high 14 points on five of 10 shooting as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team buried Rutgers University-Newark 59-30 Wednesday at the Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J. Senior guard Dani Dudek was five-of-nine from the floor as she dished out eight assists and tallied 13 points. The Ducks move to 2-1 on the year as the Scarlet Raiders fall to 0-2.

Stevens opened the first half having scored the first 11 points of the game. Sophomore center Paige Armstrong drained three jumpers in the 11-0 run. Rutgers-Newark got on the board as senior Jayne Lin Jones (Rockaway, N.J.) hit a three to start the scoring drive for the Scarlet Raiders. They went on an 8-5 run to bring the Scarlet Raiders within nine as senior Youngor Kehleay (Eatontown, N.J.) buried her first three-point field-goal of the game.

Ahead 18-9, Stevens outscored the Scarlet Raiders 16-3 in the final 7:25 of the first half. During that time, Dudek posted five points on a two-point basket and three free-throws. Fuller drilled another three as sophomore forward Victoria Webber notched a field-goal. Freshmen Jillian Barrett and Melissa Collier as well as Armstrong combined for the remaining six points recorded by the Ducks. Stevens finished the first half having shot 48.3 percent from the floor.

With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation and ahead 45-25, the Ducks posted their third big run of the game. Stevens outscored Rutgers-Newark 14-5 in the final 8:01, headed by Dudek and Collier. Collectively, the tandem totaled 10 points on four field-goals as Dudek added a pair of rebounds in the spurt.

Stevens totaled 43 rebounds compared to the 33 that Rutgers-Newark pulled down. The Ducks notched a shooting percentage of 40.7 for the game. Armstrong had 13 points on six of 11 shooting as she collected seven rebounds. Barrett and Collier each posted six points apiece, while Barrett swiped a pair of steals and grabbed nine rebounds. As a team, the Ducks were six-of-eight from the charity line.

Stevens will return to action this weekend when it competes in the Gothic Knight Tip-Off Tournament hosted by New Jersey City University. The Ducks will take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Stevens is guaranteed to play a game on Sunday as it will face either University of Massachusetts-Boston or NJCU.
