MADISON, N.J. (February 10, 2008) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team went 3-3 at the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference team event held in Madison, N.J. on Sunday. The Ducks earned wins against Yeshiva University (14-2), City College of New York (19-8) and Hunter College (14-13), as they dropped matches to Haverford College (12-15), Johns Hopkins University (13-14) and Drew University (10-17). With today's outcome, the squad has closed out team competition for the season as they begin to prepare for individual performances.
Stevens (10-7) finished fifth overall at the event, while Drew took home first-place honors having gone 5-1 on the day. In Epee the Ducks were led by junior Rachel Cannell, who posted a 14-2 mark during her bouts. Cannell recorded her 107th win of her career and has moved to fourth all-time as she still has one year left to close on Andrea Chimels' current record of 166 wins. Senior Emily Freier went 10-7 on the day and has moved to third all-time for most wins in a career with 121. She sits behind Lauren Fuchs who has totaled 123 in her four-year career from 2001-04. Sophomore Alexis Sowuleski and freshman Meagan Ritter had solid performances for the Ducks. Sowuleski finished 8-5 as Ritter recorded a 3-2 mark at the competition.
In foil, Stevens was led by senior captain Natalia Chabebe who registered a 15-3 mark. Sophomore sabriest Laura Sodon led the sabre team as she went 12-6 in her bouts. Junior Beatrice Wilson also had a strong showing with her 9-9 outing.
“Overall we had a solid day of competition,” said Head Coach Linda Vollkommer-Lynch. “We earned a tough win over conference opponent Hunter, while having lost a close match to Johns Hopkins. We are looking forward to a week of preparation before our individual performances leading up to NCAA's, closing out the 2007-08 season,” added Vollkommer-Lynch.
Stevens will return to action Sunday, February 17 when it hosts the 11th annual Stevens Institute of Technology Invitational in the Canavan Arena at 10 a.m. in Hoboken, N.J.
