EWING, N.J. (February 6, 2008) – Senior forward Tim Williams recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in just 23 minutes of playing time in leading the 22nd-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team to a 63-52 victory over The College of New Jersey on Wednesday in Ewing, N.J. Junior guard Virgil Gray added 11 points and six rebounds as the Ducks won their third game in a row to improve to 18-3 on the year.
Stevens also received a solid performance out of senior guard Waleed Farid, who finished with nine points, six rebounds, and six assists. With his two steals against the Lions, Farid moved into sole possession of second place on the Ducks' all-time list for career steals. He surpassed Oscar Mujica, who had 211 steals from 1978-82. Farid now has 213 career steals. Josean Valasquez is the all-time leader at Stevens with 218 steals, which he had from 1995-99.
Junior guard Anthony Passalacqua added nine points and six rebounds in the victory. He was 3-for-3 from downtown. Sophomore guard George Greco totaled nine points and five assists. He also made three three-pointers on the night. Sophomore guard/forward Matt Higgins chipped in with eight points and five rebounds off the bench.
TCNJ (6-14) was paced by junior guard Jeff Molinelli (Pennington, N.J.), who scored a career-high 24 points. Senior forward Mark Aziz (Hackettstown, N.J.) added 11 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
Leading 25-20 at halftime, Stevens pushed the margin to eight points as Greco drained a three-pointer on the Ducks' first possession of the second half. Shortly thereafter, Passalacqua knocked down a shot from behind the arc to extend the lead to 33-24 with 17:08 remaining.
Up 38-33 with just over 11 minutes to go, Stevens scored six quick points capped off by a lay-up by Higgins that put the Ducks in front by 11 points (44-33). Following a lay-up by Molinelli, junior guard Michael Baker converted a three-point play for Stevens. Williams knocked down a pair of free throws to stake the Ducks to their biggest lead of the game at 49-35 with 7:09 remaining.
Stevens shot 39.6 percent (21-for-53) from the floor, while TCNJ made just 30.6 percent (19-for-62) of its field-goal attempts. The Ducks owned a 49-33 advantage on the boards.
Coming up on Sunday, Stevens will look to secure a bid to the Empire 8 Tournament with a win at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. Opening tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
