PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 19, 2008) – Senior catcher David Katusa went 3-for-5 with a run scored as the Stevens Institute of Technology Baseball team dropped a one-run game (2-1) in the tenth inning to the College of Mount Saint Vincent Saturday afternoon in Purchase, N.Y. Senior pitcher Chris Burgess threw for eight innings allowing just an earned run on 11 hits, while having struck out nine batters.
Following two strikeouts in the bottom of the tenth from senior pitcher Armando Suarez, three consecutive walks after a single up the middle plated senior infielder Al Schor (Norwalk, Conn.) for the game-winning run. The Ducks (6-20) gave up the tying run the bottom of the ninth as Schor started things off with a double to right center. Senior infielder Tanner Munroe (Milford, Conn.) drove in Schor off a single up the middle to knot the game at 1-1. Freshman infielder Ken Meerendonk came in and posted a strikeout for the first out, followed by a force-out at second. With the bases loaded, senior catcher Logan Mauzy (Homer, N.Y.) went down to on strikes as Meerendonk got Stevens out of the inning.
After five scoreless innings, Katusa singled to right field in the top of the sixth. Freshman outfielder Matt Glassman laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Katusa into scoring position. The ensuing batter, senior first baseman John Frustaci reached on an error by the second baseman as Katusa came into snap the 0-0 stalemate.
For the Dolphins (14-12), Munroe went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while junior infielder Josh Cuozzo (Westbury, N.Y.) batted 2-for-3 in the victory. Schor finished the day 2-for-5 having scored both runs for Mount Saint Vincent. Junior pitcher Corey Kirsh (East Meadow, N.Y.) threw for nine innings and garnered nine hits and an earned run. Senior pitcher Scott Taylor (Jersey City, N.J.) came in for the top half of the tenth as he earned the win for striking out two and allowing no hits.
Freshman outfielder Matt Roman went 2-for-4 on the day. Suarez was tagged with the loss (0-1) as he loaded the bases and walked-in the winning run.
Stevens will return to action on Sunday as it has a doubleheader scheduled against Saint Joseph's College in Hoboken, N.J. Game One is slated for a 3 p.m. start. Live Stats will be provided at /livestats/baseball/xlive.htm.
