MADISON, N.J. (September 3, 2008) – Sophomore Allyson Kingman earned her seventh singles win of the season to run her record to 7-0 as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team took down Drew University 8-1 Wednesday afternoon in Madison, N.J. The Ducks are now 5-2 on the year as they prepare to return to Empire 8 play this weekend.
For the fifth match in a row, the Ducks have gone 3-0 in doubles play. Senior Whitney Bender and Kingman started things off with an 8-2 win over junior Michelle Gbelama (Trenton, N.J.) and senior Kristin Brown (Windsor, N.Y.). At No. 2 doubles, the sophomore-freshman combination of Kendra Appleheimer and Nicole Portner took down senior Amber Porzio (West Milford, N.J.) and sophomore Sarah Cronholm (North Attelboro, Mass.) by an 8-4 count. Freshmen Morgan Scalzi and Mine Bese upended the freshmen tandem of Rebecca Olderman (Cheshire, Conn.) and Ericka Fredrickson (Brooklyn N.Y.) by a 8-1 decision.
Bender had the only hiccup in the match as she fell in the super tiebreaker to Gbelama 5-7, 7-5, 10-8 in first singles. Kingman took over and clinched the match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 over Porzio at No. 2 singles. Portner posted her sixth singles win (6-1) of her freshman year against sophomore Cronholm by the score of 6-3, 6-0. Bese followed suit with her sixth victory (6-1) of her first year as a Duck with her flawless straight sets win (6-0, 6-0) over senior Catherine Jacobs (Arlington, Va.). At fifth singles, Appleheimer defeated Amber Cicardo (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) 6-1, 6-3, while Scalzi took down freshman Fredrickson in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
Stevens will be back in action on Saturday when it takes on conference foe Alfred University at the Stevens Tennis Courts in Hoboken, N.J. at noon.
