HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 27, 2008) – The No. 12 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team pounded Elmira College in its 2008 Empire 8 opener by a final of 8-0 on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex. The Ducks scored three goals in the first half and five in the second as five different players scored in the romp. The win is Stevens' eighth-straight since joining the Empire 8 in 2007.
The Ducks got the goal party started a little more than four minutes into the contest as junior Terrence Johnson put in a Jeremy Lippel feed from point-blank range. Lippel crossed from left to right across the mouth of the goal and Johnson touched it in for the score.
Senior midfielder Peter Montalvo scored the game's second goal on blast from 22-yards away. The goal came in the 38th-minute and was his second of the season. Then, as time expired in the first half, rookie Zach Bowman took the ball down the right sideline, angled towards the box, and put a perfect shot into the top right corner of the net to put the Ducks up 3-0 going into the break.
Montalvo struck again 12:35 into the second half when he found net off a direct kick. Johnson scored his eighth goal of the season 3:35 later when he put in a Bowman rebound.
Elmira junior Tim Certosimo (Mahwah, N.J.) received his second yellow card in the 57th-minute of action, and it truly seemed to fire up the Stevens (7-1-1 overall, 1-0 Empire 8) offense.
After Johnson's and Motalvo's tallies, the Stevens offense took a 10-minute break before burying Elmira with three goals in a span 2:16. Rookie Peter Bednarsky scored his third goal of 2008 unassisted at 71:30 to put Stevens ahead 6-0. Sophomore Esmir Vucetovic then assisted the final two tallies of the contest. The first was to freshman Mykel Pereira, and the second was to Bowman.
Stevens held a 15-1 advantage in corners and a ridiculous, 25-5 advantage in shots taken. 16 of the Ducks' 25 shots were on goal as they have now outscored their opponents 34-5 in 2008.
Sophomore keeper Zach Carr was in net for Stevens and was credited with the win. He played the first 70 minutes. Rookie Ethan Graham took over and made the only Stevens save of the day.
Jon DePrimo (Elmira, N.Y.) was impressive in net even though he allowed five goals in a little more than 70 minutes of action. On four separate occasions, the senior stopped complete breakaways when it was just him and the Stevens attack.
The Ducks will return to action when they host St. John Fisher College next Saturday on Homecoming Weekend. The game will be aired live on www.Empire8.tv and is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
