UNION, N.J. (September 6, 2008) – Junior forward Kara Borzillo and senior forward Hillary Paul  each scored two goals as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team continued its hot start with a 5-3 win over Kean University on Saturday afternoon. The Ducks jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first half as they converted on two penalty strokes less than three minutes apart.

Stevens (4-0) went up early as Borzillo was able to put away a loose ball in front of the net 4:59 into the game. The score remained 1-0 until the 29:45 mark when Paul was successful on a penalty stroke. Just 2:16 later, Borzillo scored her second on a penalty stroke as well to put Stevens up 3-0. She now has five goals on the year, and the Ducks are a perfect 3-for-3 on penalty stroke attempts this season.

Kean (1-2) got on the board in the 44th minute after a penalty corner. Junior Brittany Gibbs (West Deptford, N.J.) found net off an assist from junior Julie Bachovchin (Piscataway, N.J.). That was the first goal the Ducks had allowed all season as they had held their opponents scoreless for the first 270:55 of game time. Sophomore Ellyn Griggs, who was in goal today, had her personal scoreless streak ended at 225:55. Griggs got the win and moves to 4-0. She made five saves and allowed three goals.

Paul scored her second goal of the game and fourth of the season in the 50th minute of the game from the left side and sophomore forward Allison Basile gave the Ducks a 5-1 lead with her second goal of the season. Borzillo was credited with the assist.

Bachovchin scored an unassisted goal in the 56th minute to cut the Stevens lead to three, and Gibbs scored her second goal of the day with 29 seconds remaining for the final margin.

Ashlie Berghold (Boyertown, Pa.), Stephanie Cirino (Warminster, Pa.), and Lauren Dobbs (Palmyra, N.J.) split time in net for Kean as Berghold was credited with the loss.

Stevens out-shot the Cougars 17-12 overall but Kean held a 7-6 advantage in the second half. Each team took a total of nine penalty corners and 13 of Stevens' 17 shots were on goal.

“We had a very solid team effort today,” Head Coach Jessica Reed said following the contest. “Every time they got some momentum we did a very nice job getting into passing lanes and slowing them down.”

Stevens will return to the field on Saturday, September 13, to host Richard Stockton College. The game is schedule for a 1 p.m. start.
