Men's Swimming Improves to 5-0 with 150-103 Win Over Misericordia

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 14, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team continued its great start to the 2009-10 season with an easy, 150-103, win over visiting Misericordia University on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Aquatic Center in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks won nine of 14 total events and swam three of the last four in exhibition as they improve to a perfect 5-0 on the year. Freshman John Hu also turned an NCAA B-cut in the 400-yard individual medley, carding a 4:05.43 and finishing first.

Freshman Greg Charriez, junior Evan Wilson, Hu, and freshman Derek Smith combined to take the top spot in the day's first event, the 400-yard medley relay. Rookie Luke Niezelski placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle, carding a 10:36.14 and freshman Kyle Ripley was second (10:44.64).

Freshman Alex Benham and sophomore Sean Iveson placed one-two in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 1:46.48 and 1:53.08, respectively, and sophomore Carl Nagle, sophomore Ben Watkins, and Derek Smith took the top-three spots in the 100-yard backstroke (57.34, 58.22, 59.70).

Hu and sophomore Mark Bagniewski finished second and third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.52, 1:05.67) and a trio of freshman swept the top spots in the 200-yard butterfly. Charriez was first (2:03.29), William Wright was second (2:08.37), and Daniel Munt (2:10.68) was third.

Junior Matthew Preedy took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle, touching at 22.24, and sophomore Steve Vealey was second (22.44). Nagle carded a 50.01 in winning the 100-free as fellow sophomore John DiMiceli was second (50.84). Charriez and Iveson were one-two in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.38, 2:10.71), and Wilson and Beham placed second and third in the 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:13.35, 2:16.15.

The Ducks swam the 500-yard freestyle, the 100-yard butterfly, and the 200-yard freestyle relay in exhibition. Derek Smith's 5:09.35 would have been good for a win in the 500-free, as was Vealey's 55:43 in the 100-fly.Hu and Wilson took one-two in the 400-yard individual medley (4:05.43, 4:17.20).

Stevens will return to action on November 20 and 21 at the Golden Bear Invitational in Kutztown, Pa. It will be the final tune-up before the Ducks compete in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship on December 4, 5, and 6.
