BOCA RATON, Fla. (March 14, 2009) – On Friday evening in Boca Raton, Fla., the Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team won its second consecutive game, defeating Kenyon College 8-4 at St. Andrews High School. Stevens scored three goals within a span of 17 seconds in the third quarter to break the game open and the Lords could never recover. The Ducks were led by two goals and an assist from senior attackman J.R. Oreskovich.
Seven different Ducks scored on the day and sophomore goalie Dave Decker was fantastic in goal for Stevens, making nine saves and picking up three ground balls to earn his third win of the season.
The two teams each won eight of the 16 face-offs as Kenyon scooped up 37 ground balls, compared to 26 for Stevens. Stevens (3-2) outshot Kenyon 33-30 and the Ducks' defense killed off all three man-up chances for the Lords.
Kenyon (1-3) held the Ducks scoreless in the first and scored the first goal of the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead. The Ducks however responded with three-straight scores over the next 9:21 of game time to take a 3-2 lead going into the locker room. The goals came from senior attackman Matt Keating, senior captain Alex Heckman, and Oreskovich.
Stevens tallied two of the first three scores in the second half to gain a 5-3 edge with 7:27 left. Neither team could score for the next six-plus minutes of the quarter but with 54 ticks to go, the Ducks erupted for their three-goal outburst to essentially put the game away.
Freshman Kevin Rose scored first as Keating was credited with the assist, sophomore Jacob Messimer was next with an unassisted goal, and a sophomore midfielder Brandon Faubert put the Ducks up 8-3.
Keating finished with a goal, two assists, and a team-high four ground balls and Messimer, and sophomore defenders Ted Pfeifer and Zach McHugh each had three ground balls.
The Lords are coached by former Stevens assistant Doug Masarti who is in his second season at Kenyon. Masarti assisted under Stevens Head Coach Byron Collins for eight years before leaving at the end of 2007.
The Ducks will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at 7 p.m. versus No. 11 Endicott College. It will be the men's lacrosse Duck Country game as all fans are encouraged to wear yellow to the game.
