BROOKLYN, N.Y. (January 26, 2010) – Despite sophomore forward Jillian Barrett's team-high 24 points on 11-for-16 shooting, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team dropped a heart-breaking, 79-68, overtime loss to Brooklyn College at the West Quad in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Ducks are now 10-7 on the year, while the Bulldogs improved to 10-8 on the season.
With the game knotted at eight with just over 14 minutes left in the first half, sophomore guard Dawn Garcia and junior center Victoria O'Connor netted back-to-back layups to stake Stevens to a four-point lead.
Still down four after a Kathleen Schuckers triple, Bulldogs junior guard Amber Gordon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) buried a three-ball of her own, cutting the lead to one, but the Ducks responded with a 6-0 spurt, beginning with a Paige Armstrong layup at 10:16, to up the Stevens advantage to seven.
Holding onto a 23-16 edge, the Ducks reeled off four-straight points to take their first double-digit lead of the game before an Ashley Allen (Sunnyside, N.Y.) bucket from long distance sliced the Brooklyn deficit to eight at the 5:39 mark.
After a pair of Priscilla Ramirez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) free-throws cut the lead to nine, Armstrong knocked down a jumper to once again put Stevens up 11. Brooklyn then mounted a 9-2 run over the next three minutes of action to pare the deficit to four, but a Barrett jumper on the ensuing Ducks' possession gave Stevens a six-point lead heading into the intermission.
Barrett scored Stevens' first three points of the second half to give the Ducks a 53-44 advantage, but a Ramirez free-throw coupled with an Ariel Smith (Newburgh, N.Y.) three-point play cut the lead back down to four. Garcia answered by scoring seven-straight points – on a jumper, a three-pointer, and a pair of free-throws – to make it 61-51.
Senior co-captain Brittany Fuller gave the Ducks their largest lead of the game with a layup with just under five-minutes to go, making it 66-53, but Ramirez drilled a three less than a minute later to cut it to 10. A pair of Frances Lyons (Brooklyn, N.Y.) free-throws at 1:41 coupled with a Smith jumper, and a pair of Gordon buckets trimmed the margin to two with just 39 second left.
Barrett finally ended a 4:26 minute Stevens scoring drought with a layup with 21 seconds remaining in regulation, but a Lyons basket on the other end to once again made it a two-point affair.
With six second left Stevens stepped to the charity stripe with a chance to make it a two-possession game, but the Ducks failed to capitalize, missing the front-end of the one-and-one, opening the door for Ramirez who raced down the court, hitting a jumper as time expired to send it into overtime.
Brooklyn senior guard Sabrina Washington (Elmira, N.Y.) ensured the Bulldogs carried the momentum into the extra session, hitting a three to open scoring in overtime. Washington and Gordon would close out the extra frame, eight-for-eight from the free-throw line, capping off an 11-0 Bulldog overtime run to seal their 10th victory of the season.
Stevens, which went just 1-for-13 from the floor and mustered just two points over the final 4:47 of regulation and overtime, shot just 35.4 percent (29-for-82) from the floor and was just 13.6 (3-for-22) from three-point range.
Garcia put forth a 16-point, 6-rebound, 3-steal, 3-assist effort in the loss, while Fuller notched her third-straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Armstrong chipped in with 12 boards.
Ramirez and Gordon led the way for Brooklyn offensively with 19 and 18 points, respectively, while Smith finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Lyons rounded out the list of Bulldogs in double-digits with 12 points.
The Ducks will try to rebound against Empire 8 rivals St. John Fisher College and Nazareth College on January 29-30.
