Men's Swimming Gets Win in Season-Opener; Ducks Down MSU, 171-87

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (October 16, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team kicked off its 2010 season with an easy, 171-87, win over in-state rival Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon in Montclair, N.J. Several Duck newcomers won events and the team placed first in 11 different races in the dual.

The team of sophomore Greg Charriez, freshman Jonathan Wang, sophomore Daniel Munt, and junior Carl Nagle won the first event of the dual, carding a 1:40.18 in the 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Luke Niezelski and junior Richard Wismer III took second and third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with times of 10:33.61 and 11:52.00. Sophomores John Hu and Derek Smith placed one-two in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.34, 1:49.13), while freshmen Shawn Hanak and Henry Hernandez took the top two spots in the 100-yard backstroke, carding 55.92 and 56.65, respectively.

Wang placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.37) and Wilson won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.58, while Charriez and Smith took second and third (2:02.02, 2:03.93). Freshman Tyler Hessler finished first in the 50-yard freestyle , touching at 22:18 and Nagle was second (22.67), while senior captain Matthew Preedy and Munt took the top-two spots in the 100-yard freestyle (49.55, 49.91).

Rookie Nick Noga placed first in the 200-yard backstroke, clocking a 2:03.95, and Hanak was second in the same event with a 2:05.40. Wang's second win of the day came in the 200-yard breaststroke. He and fellow freshman Brian Ginebaugh took one-two with times of 2:18.90 and 2:20.30, respectively.

Sophomore Alex Benham and freshman Conor Arcuri placed first and second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:51.44, 4:52.53), while Hernandez took home the 100-yard butterfly with a 55.84.

Stevens swam the final two events of the afternoon in exhibition but would have taken at least the top spot in both events.

The Ducks will return to action at the New York University Fall Invitational on October 22 and 23.
