ITHACA, N.Y. (October 24, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team fell short in its quest for a first-ever Empire 8 Tournament title, falling to top-seeded Ithaca College, 5-1, in the conference's championship match held at Cornell University's Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y. The Bombers, who for the second-consecutive season bested the Ducks in the league final, moved to 10-0 overall on the season with an unblemished 8-0 Empire 8 record, while Stevens fell to 11-3 overall on the year with a 6-2 league ledger.

Ithaca's Melissa Nunez and Cristina Nunez helped the Bombers get off on the right foot, with an 8-1 first doubles victory over Stevens' senior Allyson Kingman and junior Nicole Portner. Bombers' sophomore Allyson Young and freshman Becky Guzzo then put Ithaca up 2-0 with an 8-2 win in third doubles over the Ducks' Mine Bese and Morgan Scalzi, before Stevens' second doubles pairing of senior Kendra Appleheimer and freshman Lisa Tessitore responded with an 8-3 triumph over Ithaca's Melanie Cohen and Becky Campbell to pull the Ducks within 2-1 heading into singles action.

C. Nunez opened up singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Kingman at first singles, putting the Bombers just two points shy of clinching the league championship. M. Nunez followed things up by defeating Tessitore, 6-0, 6-1, in third singles, to put Ithaca within a point of the conference crown. Cohen would then wrap things up with a 6-1, 6-4, victory over Portner at second singles to seal the Bombers' sixth-consecutive Empire 8 title.
