HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 16, 2010) – Senior co-captains Brittany Fuller  and Sarah Gehring, who were honored in a pre-game ceremony as part of Stevens' women's basketball Senior Day festivities, combined for over half of the Ducks' points in a 79-73 triumph over Hunter College at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J., leading Stevens to its 14th victory of the season. Fuller netted a game-high 25 points, while hauling in six rebounds, and dishing out five assists, as Gehring finished with a season-high 17 points and eight boards.

Stevens opened the game on a 10-3 run, on a Paige Armstrong jumper, a pair of Dawn Garcia and Gehring threes, and a Fuller basket. The Hawks would pare the lead to three on back-to-back buckets from Juanita Whyms (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) and Shay Branch El-Vielot (Cambria Heights, N.Y.), but four-straight Jillian Barrett points once again upped the margin to seven.

Hunter battled back to within three following a Shamar Stewartson (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) triple at the 13:03 mark, but a Gehring three on the ensuing Stevens possession doubled the Duck lead at 19-13. The Hawks once again pulled to within three at 7:20 after a Whyms jumper, but Gehring again responded with a triple to make it 29-23.

The Hawks trimmed it back down to 29-26 after a Johanna Keilwitz (Wolmirstedt, Germany) three-point play, but Fuller kickstarted a 15-4 run over the next five minutes of action to stake Stevens to a 44-30 advantage with just 33 seconds left in the half.

Stewartson closed out the scoring over the first 20, knifing into the lane for two to cut the Duck lead to 12 heading into the locker room.

Hunter quickly sliced into the Stevens lead to start the second, mounting a 16-6 run over the first five minutes of action to pull within two at 50-48. Whyms then tied the game on the next Hawks' possession before Armstrong helped the Ducks regain the lead with a pair of free-throws.

A Barrett layup increased the lead to four with 10:30 to go, before a Keilwitz three-pointer made it a one-point game. Fuller then drained a three-ball of her own, spurring a crucial 13-2 run that gave the Ducks a 12-point cushion with just under four minutes remaining. Stevens junior center Victoria O'Connor tallied seven points during the stretch run, including a three-point play that capped off the rally.

A resilient Hunter squad, that dressed just six players, would trim the margin to seven on a Stewartson trey at 1:52, but Stevens went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.

O'Connor and Garcia each finished with nine points, while Armstrong and Barrett chipped in with eight points apiece.

Stewartson led the way for Hunter offensively with a team-high 25 points, while Whyms added 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior guard Deseree Boler (Bronx, N.Y.) had nine points, six rebounds, and five assists in the loss.

Stevens returns to action on Friday, February 12, when it plays host to Empire 8 rival Ithaca College.
