PremDas Keys Men's Volleyball Win Over Division I NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. (March 24, 2010) – Junior SteFan PremDas registered a season-high 22 kills and 11 digs as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team defeated Division I New Jersey Institute of Technology, 3-1 (30-27, 30-25, 25-30, 30-24), at the Fleisher Center in Newark, N.J. The Ducks, winners of nine straight matches, improved to 17-8 overall on the season, while the Highlanders fell to 2-16 on the year.

Stevens applied much of the pressure early, tallying a .562 hitting percentage on 32 swings, in a close, hard-fought, 30-27 first set triumph. The Ducks then held the Highlanders to a -.024 hitting percentage in a 30-25 second set win before NJIT staved off elimination by breaking out with a .342 clip during a 30-25 victory in the third frame. Stevens promptly responded by holding the Highlanders to a -.050 percentage in the fourth and final set, building a 12-point margin en route to a 30-24 match-clinching triumph.

PremDas added five blocks in the win, while senior co-captain John Dennan had 15 kills, 11 digs, and four block assists. Junior outside hitter Jonathan Landis finished with 13 kills and seven digs, while fellow junior Timothy Karl added eight kills and six blocks. Freshman Jake Modestow continued to impress, tallying six kills and a career-best eight blocks.

Junior co-captain Brandt Grobeis matched a season-high with 57 assists while directing the Stevens offense, as junior libero Aaron Ostrovsky collected a season-best 18 digs in defense.

NJIT freshman outside hitter Christian Puszies (Hamburg, Germany) led the way for the Highlanders with a match-high 24 kills, while sophomore Adam Gustafson (Monee, Ill.) had 20 assists, eight kills, and a team-high 12 digs. Freshman Kevin Van Oss (Dayton, Ohio) had nine kills and three blocks, while fellow rookie Matthew Lui (Aiea, Hawaii) notched a team-best 26 assists and 11 digs. Freshman Andrei Stoyanow (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had six kills, six digs, and three blocks.

Stevens hit .255 for the match, registering 61 kills on 153 swings, while holding NJIT to a paltry .139 hitting percentage (54 kills, 32 errors, 158 attempts). The Ducks out-blocked the Highlanders 27-14, while also holding a 61-52 advantage in both assists and digs.

Stevens returns to action Mount Olive College and Lees-McCrae College on March 26 and 27, respectively.
