WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 24, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped two games to Empire 8 rival Elmira College Saturday afternoon by scores of 6-0 and 3-1. Molly Herforth pitched a complete game in game two without allowing an earned run, and Lauren Hurley had an RBI double in the sixth inning for the Ducks in the second game as well. The wins move Elmira's record to 13-4 while Stevens falls to 7-23. Seniors Briana Gilmartin, Gabrielle Gornelli and Amanda Petrocelli were honored in a ceremony at home plate between the two games.

In game one, Petrocelli and Elmira starter Katie Hobson (Guilford, Conn.) traded shutout frames until the third, when the Soaring Eagles scored four runs on three hits and two errors to take the lead. Stevens centerfielder Lauren Hurley limited the damage with a nice running catch near the wall in left-centerfield for the first out of the inning.

Elmira scored two more runs in the fourth on a 2-RBI double off the wall in the leftfield gap by Brintee McGuire (Herkimer, N.Y.).

Shortstop Naomi Sacks singled through the left side to lead off the fourth, but the Ducks would get only one more baserunner for the rest of the game – Sarah Parker on a bunt single in the seventh – and fell by a final score of 6-0 in game one.

Between games of the doubleheader, the softball class of 2010 was honored in a ceremony with their families at home plate, where they were presented with bouquets of flowers and jackets from the team.

In the second game, Stevens starter Molly Herforth ran into some bad luck, surrendering only three unearned runs to take the loss.

The Ducks scored one run in the sixth on a ground-rule double by Hurley that scored Victoria Webber, who had led off the frame with a base hit. Sarah Parker got the only other hit for Stevens with a one-out single in the fourth.

The team will be back in action for its final home games of the season Sunday afternoon at the Weehawken Waterfront at 1p.m. vs. Utica College.
