ITHACA, N.Y. (April 3, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped both ends of its first-ever Empire 8 doubleheader, falling to Ithaca College by scores of 12-0 and 14-0 in two five-inning contests. Junior Denise Wagner had two hits on the afternoon to lead the Ducks (3-13). The Bombers raised their season record to 11-5.
Ithaca scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning of game one, and never looked back the rest of the day. Bomber starter Alyssa Brook (Tinton Falls, N.J.) held Stevens scoreless and only allowed two hits in the first game.
The Ducks had their best chance to score in the top of the third, when Maggie Weigel was hit by a pitch and Victoria Webber singled to put the first two batters on for Stevens, but Brook buckled down and did not allow the runners to advance any farther.
Denise Wagner led off the fifth with a single to left field for the other Stevens hit in the first game.
In game two, the story was similar, as Ithaca raced out to a seven-run first inning lead en route to another five-inning win.
Sarah Parker had a leadoff knock in the third inning to keep her season average at .400.
In the fifth inning, Wagner and Gabrielle Gornelli opened up the frame with back-to-back singles to notch the other Stevens hits.
The Ducks will play next at the College of Mt. St. Vincent, in Riverdale, N.Y. Action starts at 4p.m. on April 7.
