ALFRED, N.Y. (April 30, 2010) – Alfred University took two games from Stevens Institute of Technology in Empire 8 action on Friday. The scores we 9-0 and 12-0, with both contests shortened to five-inning affairs. Centerfielder Lauren Hurley went 2-for-3 in game one and added another hit in game two to pace the Ducks, who also got base knocks from Clair Strom and Sarah Parker.
In game one, Alfred starter Nicole Hedrick (Albany, N.Y.) held Stevens scoreless and to just two hits. The Ducks' starting pitcher Amanda Petrocelli kept pace over the first part of the game, and there was no score after one inning.
But the Saxons would score nine runs over the next nine outs and keep Stevens off the scoreboard to take game one, 9-0.
In game two with Alfred batting first, the Saxons raced out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. Hendrick, Erin Johnstone (West Henrietta, N.Y.) and Erika LaBarron (Campbell, N.Y.) each had three RBI for Alfred in game two. The Saxons would make the final score 12-0 before the game was called after the fifth inning.
Stevens will wrap up its maiden season Saturday afternoon at Rochester Institute of Technology, beginning at 12 p.m.
