Men's Lacrosse Falls to Ithaca in Season Finale

ITHACA, N.Y. (May 1, 2010) – Despite overcoming a 7-1 deficit to take an 8-7 lead with 12:41 to play in the fourth quarter, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team fell to Ithaca College, 11-8, at Upper Terrace Field in Ithaca, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon. Junior Brandon Faubert led the Ducks with four goals as Stevens ends its season with an overall record of 9-6 and an Empire 8 mark of 5-3.

Ithaca opened the game with five-straight goals before Faubert tallied to put Stevens on the scoreboard. The Bombers scored twice more to make it 7-1 with 7:34 to play in the first half, but Faubert tallied two goals – the second coming with 24 seconds left in the half – to make it 7-4. The Ducks took the ensuing face-off and junior Chris Laurita netted a goal with 13 seconds left in the half to make the score 7-4.

Faubert opened the second-half scoring with an unassisted goal 4:48 into the third, and freshman Rich Dupras brought the Ducks within one 16 seconds later. The next 10:53 of the third quarter saw both defenses hold strong but with three seconds remaining, senior James Napolitano knotted the game at seven apiece.

Junior Taylor Brown gave the Ducks the lead with 12:41 to play, but junior Ryan Lowe (Fairport, N.Y.) tied the game 1:23 later for the Bombers. Junior Jay Lucas (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) gave Ithaca the lead for good with 6:09 left in the contest, and sophomore Tom Mongelli (Kinnelon, N.J.) and Lucas put in insurance goals with 3:02 and 2:02 remaining in the fourth.

Ithaca ended with a 45-36 edge in the game as each team picked up 31 ground balls. The Bombers won 16-of-23 face-offs but committed 20 turnovers compared to just eight for Stevens.

Mongelli, Lucas, Lowe, and senior Mike Logan (Merrick, N.Y.) each scored two goals to lead the Bombers offense. Junior David Gal (Amherst, Mass.) earned the win in goal, picking up five ground balls and making 14 stops.

Junior Zach McHugh picked up a team-high three ground balls and caused a team-high three turnovers for the Ducks. Junior Dave Decker made nine saves in goal for Stevens.
