HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 1, 2010) – Senior midfielder Nolan Sandberg put an end to a tense, scoreless match in the third minute of overtime as he took a long pass from freshman Leonardo Casas in the box and chipped the ball just under the crossbar to break the 0-0 tie with New York University and give the No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team the victory in both teams' first game of the season. The Ducks are now 1-0 while the Violets fall to 0-1.
Stevens outshot the Violets 18-12 overall and controlled most of the action early on. After generating some strong chances over the first 15 minutes, the ball was played in the middle of the field for much of the first half as NYU was able to mount some solid attacks at the Stevens defense and maintained possession.
Throughout the second half, the Ducks seemed to take hold of the tempo and possession, creating scoring opportunities throughout, with the defense and midfield doing a nice job keeping the ball in the Violet zone. Stevens controlled the ball and action for the first two minutes of overtime before Casas found Sandberg 2:20 into the extra period.
Stevens took eight corners compared to six for NYU. Senior goalkeeper Zach Carr earned the 39th shutout of his career, making two saves.
The Ducks will return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they travel to SUNY New Paltz. Stevens will return home on September 10 and 11 to host the Stevens College Cup.
