HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 5, 2010) – Despite dominating the game from start to finish, the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team fell 1-0 to King's College on Sunday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex in the finale of the Stevens Field Hockey Tournament. The Ducks (0-3) ended the game with a 36-5 edge in shots and a 17-4 advantage in penalty corners but could not find the back of net. King's goalkeeper Erin McGinley (Kingston, Pa.) was phenomenal, making a total of 17 saves on the afternoon.
From the opening tap, Stevens controlled most of the action and field position, generating countless opportunities in the King's zone. The Ducks' best chances of the first half came over a 25 second span in which sophomore forward Marguerite Chavez ripped three shots on goal. The first was saved, the second was blocked, and on the third, McGinley went horizontal to her right to make the stop on an elevated attempt from Chavez.
King's was able to net the game-winner in the 23rd minute when junior midfielder Jenera Quinones (Wilkes Barre, Pa.) put in a shot in front and senior forward Danielle Terracciano (Columbus, N.J.) deflected it into the upper-left corner of the goal.
Stevens ended the first half with a 13-5 advantage in shots, and a 5-3 edge in corners while controlling field position for most of the action.
The second half was played almost entirely in the Monarch zone. Stevens outshot and out-cornered King's 23-0 and 12-1, respectively, in the half. The Ducks had many strong chances that were either thwarted by McGinley or missed just wide.
Senior goalkeeper Ellyn Griggs took the loss in goal for the Ducks, making two saves and allowing the one goal, while Chavez put four of her 10 shots on net.
Stevens will look to get in the win column on on Sunday, September 12 when it hosts Haverford College at 5:30 p.m. All the action will be webcast live from the De Baun Athletic Complex at www.PennAtlantic.com.
