Field Hockey Falls in ECAC Mid-Atlantic Semis to Lebanon Valley

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 7, 2011) – The Lebanon Valley College field hockey team came back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Stevens Institute of Technology, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Championship at Alvernia College. Stevens (12-8) received goals from junior Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.), sophomore Rachel Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.), and sophomore Grace Ridge (Moorestown, N.J.) in the loss.

Top-seeded LVC (16-5) ended with a 26-11 edge in shots and an 8-5 margin in penalty corners, but senior Krysten Suarez was able to keep the Ducks in the game with 15 saves in goal.

After junior forward Cate Cusack (Woodbury Heights, N.J.) gave the Dutchwomen a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute, the Ducks recorded the game's next three scores to take a 3-1 lead with 16:18 to play. Marguerite Chavez pulled Stevens even at 19:19 with her 11th tally of the season thanks to an assist from senior tri-captain Mallory Swanson (Princeton Junction, N.J.).

The Ducks took their first lead of the afternoon 7:24 into the second period when Rachel Chavez recorded her 10th of the season, burying a shot in the lower-left corner. Ridge notched her second of the year off of a penalty corner, firing a laser in the lower-right corner of the cage following an insert from senior tri-captain Jillian Price (West Islip, N.Y.) to start the play.

Lebanon Valley was able to tally the final three scores of the contest over the game's final 7:25, the last coming from Cusack with 1:12 remaining.

Senior Jocelyn Novak (Brodheadsville, Pa.) and junior Kirsten Martzal (Richland, Pa.) also had markers for the Dutchwomen.

Lebanon Valley will take on Alvernia College for the ECAC Mid-Atlantic title on Sunday afternoon.
