POMONA, N.J. (April 7, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team (12-10) dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey (10-8) on Thursday afternoon. Naomi Sacks and Kayla Berardi had hits in both games for the Ducks, who were within striking distance all afternoon and had the go-ahead run on-base in the final inning of game two.
Freshman Kayla Berardi and Stockton's Bianca DiDolace (South Plainfield, N.J.) worked dueling shutouts in the first game until the sixth inning. There, the Ospreys loaded the bases with nobody out and freshman Nicole Chabak (Marlton, N.J.) knocked a three-run double for the only runs of the 3-0 Stockton victory.
Berardi struck out five and walked one in her six innings of work.
Stevens out-hit the Ospreys in the first game, getting doubles by Stephanie Senkevich and Victoria Webber and singles from Berardi, Danielle DeFeo, Sacks and Noreen Jordan in the contest.
The Ducks scored in their first turn at bat in game two, as Sacks doubled to right field with two outs. Clair Strom followed with a single the opposite way to right field, moving Sacks to third, where she scored on the next play via a wild pitch and Stevens led 1-0 after a half-inning of play.
Two Stockton hits followed by an RBI single from Danielle Accardi (East Brunswick, N.J.) tied the game in the bottom half for Stockton.
The 1-1 deadlock maintained by pitchers Molly Herforth and Jamie Gasko (Cinnaminson, N.J.) remained until the bottom of the fifth, when Arianna Donzuso (Hammonton, N.J.) hit a two-out, two-run double for a 3-1 Stockton lead.
Stevens loaded the bases in the seventh with one out, but reliever Brittany Giacomelli (Vineland, N.J.) retired the next two batters to earn the save and close out the 3-1 Stockton victory.
Stevens will play next in an Empire 8 twinbill at St. John Fisher on Saturday at 1 p.m.
