POMONA, N.J. (May 11, 2011) – The fifth-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology team fell to the no. four seed Richard Stockton College of New Jersey by a score of 6-1 in the opening round of the ECAC Tournament on Wednesday. Freshman Noreen Jordan went 2-for-2 at the plate and scored a run to lead the Ducks offensively in what was the team's final game of the season. Stockton (19-18) will move on to the ECAC semifinals this weekend.
Pitchers Molly Herforth of Stevens and Brittany Giacomelli (Vineland, N.J.) of Stockton held both offences in check over the first two innings of the single-elimination game, as neither side allowed a run through the opening frames.
The Ospreys broke through with a two-out rally in the third inning. After the first two hitters were set down quickly, a single, a walk, and an RBI double by Nicole Chabak (Marlton, N.J.) made the score 2-0. Stockton would add another run in the inning on an RBI single by Ally Roma (West Long Branch, N.J.) as the third ended with RSCNJ leading 3-0.
The Ducks threatened in the next inning, as Clair Strom socked a double and Stephanie Senkevich singled with one out. Noreen Jordan singled in the inning as well, but Stevens could not hang a run on the board.
Stockton added another insurance run when they loaded the bases in the fifth and got a sacrifice fly from Chabak to increase their lead to 4-0. Joey Afflitto (Brick, N.J.) put the game out of reach with a two-run homer for the Ospreys in the sixth inning.
Stevens battled to the end, where Noreen Jordan doubled in the seventh and Lauren Hurley drove her in with an RBI single to help the Ducks avoid the shutout.
Wednesday's game concludes the 2011 season for Stevens, a remarkable year for the second-year program where the team went 21-20 – a 13-win improvement from last season - to earn its first-ever postseason berths.
