DALLAS, Pa. (October 20, 2012)
– The Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team (1-0) rolled to a 175-82 win at Misericordia University (0-1) Saturday to open the 2012-13 season. The Ducks set eight pool records and had the top time in 13 of the 14 total events.

The Ducks earned a win in the 200-yard medley relay to open the meet as senior captain Greg Charriez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.), senior captain Daniel Munt (Raleigh, N.C.), junior Mitchell Epperly (Mahwah, N.J.) and junior Shawn Hanak (North Royalton, Ohio) teamed to turn in a 1:37.91.

Sophomore Wesley Elford (Phoeniz, Ariz.) won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a pool-record time of 9:44.04, with sophomore Chris Iosue (Bellingham, Mass.) taking third (10:49.07). Senior Alex Benham (Raleigh, N.C.), freshman Tommy Wolinski (Wallington, N.J.) and junior Nick Noga (Oriskany, N.Y.) swept the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.57, 1:47.07, 1:48.56), with Charriez earning the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking a 54.04. Freshman Nathan Messing (Juneau, Alaska) took third in the 100-back with a time of 56.08. The winning time from Benham in the 200-free was another pool-record.

Freshmen Byron Held (Beaverton, Ore.), Eric Sandrib (Litchfield, Conn.) and Michael Phillips (Albuquerque, N.M.) swept the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.59, 1:04.65, 1:05.03), and senior John Hu (Oak Harbor, Wash.), sophomore Price Hu (Oak Harbor, Wash.) and freshman Joshua Lefeber (Franklin, Wis.) did the same in the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.18, 2:00.29. 2:02.17). John Hu's 1:55.18 was also a new pool-record.

Hanak, Munt and freshman Spenser Swanton (Saginaw, Mich.) took the top-three spots in the 50-yard freestyle (21.88, 22.44, 23.03), as did junior captain Joe Huyett (Blandon, Pa.), junior Henry Hernandez (Chico, Calif.) and Elijah Davis (Broomfield, Colo.) in the 100-yard freestyle (48.64, 49.48, 50.45).

Freshman Ravi Sun (Arkadelphia, Ark.) and freshman Keith Monteiro (Scotch Plains, N.J.) went one-three in the 200-yard backstroke with times of 1:53.84 and 2:06.93, respectively, as Sun broke the previous pool-mark. Freshman Craig O'Dell (Golden, Colo.) and Lefeber were second and third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.79, 2:19.15), while Elford, Benham and junior Conor Arcuri (Beaverton, Ore.) went one-two-three in the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.18, 4:48.78, 4:59.02). Elford broke the pool-record with his mark in the 500.

Charriez, Epperly and sophomore Jonathan Collins (Tecumseh, Mich.) finished first, second and third in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking times of 54.06, 54.18 and 57.23. John Hu's 1:58.37 would have been good for the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley as would the 3:14.48 in the 400-yard freestyle relay that Huyett, Davis, Noga and Hanak acheieved, but the Ducks swam those final two events in exhibition. Hu's 200-IM and the 400-free relay were also pool-bests.

Stevens will return to action at home versus SUNY New Paltz on Saturday at 1 p.m.
