HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 20, 2012) – On a sunny afternoon against Empire 8 Conference rival St. John Fisher College, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team improved to 10-5 (5-2) on the season with a 2-1 victory on Senior Day. With the win, the Ducks clinched the No. 2 seed in the Empire 8 Tournament which will be held at Ithaca College on November 3 and 4.
Stevens wasted no time to take the lead in the match, as junior forward
Jessie Wos (Mukwonago, Wis.) capitalized on a short cross from sophomore forward
Ann Heine (Sammamish, Wash.) just 2:10 into the contest. Wos' strike found the top right corner of the goal for her sixth marker of the season.
Heine added to her offensive day 10 minutes later as she raced past the backline of the Fisher defense for a one-on-one chance with Cardinals' goalkeeper
Sydney DeVitto. Heine dodged around DeVitto and put the Ducks up 2-0 at the 12:47 mark of the first half. She now has eight goals on the year, five of which are game-winners.
Fisher closed the gap before halftime on an open net after junior
Melissa Murphy (Pompton Plains, N.J.) came out of the box to challenge a through ball.
Aimee Caluwe found a streaking
Hannah Gilbride down the middle of the field in the 38th minute to cut the Cardinals deficit to 2-1.
Both teams were evenly matched throughout the second half with Fisher holding the best opportunity to tally a goal. With 19 minutes remaining in the contest, a failed clear attempt by the Stevens defense was corralled in by
Chelsea Oberkrieser whose shot was turned away by a sprawling Murphy to secure the win for the Ducks with one of her four saves.
Murphy now has four victories on the season.
Each squad took 10 shots in the match, while Fisher held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Ducks wrap up their home regular season against Western Connecticut State University on October 24 at 7 p.m. before traveling to Elmira College on the 27th for the team's last showdown of the year.
