ELMIRA, N.Y. (October 27, 2012) – In the final regular season match of the season, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team fell to Empire 8 Conference foe Elmira College, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon. Stevens is now 10-6-1 overall heading into the Empire 8 tournament as the No. 2 seed on November 3 and 4.
The Ducks trailed early in the contest after Elmira netted the opening goal in the 17th minute of play. Emily Karpinski recorded the go-ahead goal off a pass Kelsey Kiel for the 5-11-1 Soaring Eagles.
Sophomore forward
Ann Heine (Sammamish, Wash.) knotted the game up at one a piece on her ninth goal of the season minutes before the end of the first half. Heine scored unassisted on one of her three shots on the afternoon.
Elmira tallied the game-winning in the 63rd minute for its second victory against the Ducks in the past three meetings. Despite being outshot, 26-8, the Soaring Eagles made the best of their chances, while goalkeeper Megan Lowe stopped 14 shots in the win.
Junior
Melissa Murphy (Pompton Plains, N.J.) recorded two saves in all 90 minutes in a losing effort.
Stevens travels to Ithaca College and will take on Nazareth at 1:30 p.m. in the semifinals of conference championship. If the Ducks are victorious, they will play at 12 p.m. on the 4th against Ithaca or St. John Fisher College for the Empire 8 crown.
