Box Score NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (December 4, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team lost an overtime matchup to SUNY New Paltz, 76-69 on Tuesday evening on the road. With the loss, Stevens has dropped three straight games after starting the season 3-0.
Junior
Avis Benjamin (Queens, N.Y.) led all players with 29 points on 10-of-22 shooting from the field and pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds. Benjamin also recorded three steals in the loss and made nine of 14 attempts from the line.
Freshman
Dylan Krause (Atlanta, Ga.) also posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards to go along with three steals. Fellow freshman
Miranda Ripken (Fallston, Md.) narrowly missed out on a double-double with 18 points and eight rebounds. Ripken shot 8-for-15 on the evening.
Senior
Maggie Kowalska (Edison, N.J.) added four points and rebounds apiece, and chipped in three steals and two blocks. Junior
Molly Spadaro (Sewell, N.J.) tallied six boards with three points, three steals and two assists.
The Ducks led the showdown, 31-27, at halftime and held their largest lead of the opening 20 minutes with 16 seconds left at 31-24. New Paltz hit a three-pointer on a last second shot to cut into the seven-point deficit heading into the break.
New Paltz opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take a 36-33 lead at the 17:11 mark and stayed ahead until Krause nailed one of three Stevens long balls with 13:51 remaining in regulation to put the Ducks back in front at 41-40.
The contest stayed within four points on either side until Hawks' Jennifer Sixsmith sunk a free throw with 7:34 to go to push their lead to 53-48. Stevens then went on an 8-0 run over the next 2:17 and overtook the lead on a jumper by Krause and a free throw by Benjamin with 5:17 to go.
Both squads remained scoreless for a 2:19 span until junior
Jen Thompson (Linwood, N.J.) snapped the skid at the charity stripe for a 57-53 advantage for the Ducks.
New Paltz ran off the next four points in the final three minutes to force overtime and ran away with the win in extra time. The Hawks used seven free throws and two three-pointers to outscore the Ducks, 19-12, in overtime.
Stevens shot 26-for-67 from the field (38.8-percent), while New Paltz was 23-of-73 from the floor. The Hawks made eight more attempts from the line and five more from long range which proved to be the difference in the game.
The Ducks will be back on the court against Empire 8 Conference foe Utica College on December 7 at 6 p.m. in Utica, N.Y. After another road game against Montclair State University on the 10th, the Ducks return home to finish up the fall semester against The College of New Jersey on the 15th at 1 p.m.
