First Loss of Season Handed to Men's Volleyball by New Paltz

Box Score NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (February 15, 2012) – In a top-20 matchup between United Volleyball Conference foes, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's team, ranked eighth in the country, fell to No. 14 SUNY New Paltz, 3-2, in the Hawk Center on Wednesday evening, February 15. The loss is the first for the Ducks so far in this early season, as they are now 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the UVC.

In the five-set match, 25-21, 27-25, 19-25, 22-25, 15-8, freshman Ian Tyger (York, Pa.) paced the Ducks with 18 kills and a .382 hitting percentage in 34 attempts. Tyger also chipped in six digs, two blocks and a service ace.

Junior Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) and sophomore David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) put together solid efforts, combining for 29 kills and 19 digs. Hannum tallied 15 kills and eight digs, while Evans posted 14 kills, 11 digs, three blocks and three assists. Hannum hit at a .323 clip in the match.

Distributing the ball around the floor for Stevens was freshman Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.), who handed out 44 assists to go along with 10 digs. In just seven matches this season, Aeckerle has nearly eclipsed 250 assists, as he currently stands at 245 in 24 sets played.

The Ducks will be back in action on Saturday, February 18, for a tri-match in Canavan Arena. Stevens will take on No. 4 Juniata College at 12 p.m. and then square off with New Jersey City University at 4 p.m.
