First Day Split for Men's Volleyball at Baruch

(February 25, 2012) – In the first day at the Baruch College Tournament, the Steven Institute of Technology men's volleyball team split its two matches with No. 9 Rivier College and No. 15 Emmanuel College on February 25 at the ARC Arena. Stevens topped Rivier, 3-1, but fell by the identical score the Emmanuel.

In the four-set win over the Raiders, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21, freshman Ian Tyger (York, Pa.) led all Duck players with 14 kills in 22 attempts for a .409 hitting percentage. Tyger also tallied four blocks, three digs and two service aces.

Sophomore Ryan Seifert (Chicopee, Mass.) also hammered down double digit kills with 13 and also chipped in four digs and two blocks. Junior Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) was the third Duck to eclipse 10 kills with 11 to his credit. Hannum added five digs and five blocks in the win.

Freshmen setters Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) and Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) combined for 46 assists. Aeckerle handed out 28 to go along with six digs, while Schlosser dished out 18 and chipped in four digs.

At the net, juniors Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.) and James Mataras (River Vale, N.J.) totaled 10 blocks. Modestow recorded seven total blocks and four kills, while Mataras sent back three and registered three digs.

Freshman Etan Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.) came up just two kills short of 10 with eight.

In the lost to the Saints, 15-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23, Hannum paced Stevens this time with 14 kills and a .323 percentage. He also posted four digs and two aces.

Seifert, Tyger and Bennett combined for 28 kills in the loss. Seifert posted the highest with 11, Tyger was right behind with nine and Bennett once again tallied eight. Seifert also led the Ducks with seven digs, and Bennett chipped in with five.

Aeckerle and Schlosser once again split time and distributed 46 assists as well. This time, Aeckerle recorded 32 and Schlosser posted 14.

Modestow picked up four blocks in the loss.

Stevens will be back on the courts tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when it takes on Kean University in the opener and No. 5 Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the finale.
