Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 13, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team went toe-to-toe with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for a majority of the nine-inning affair, but the Ducks ended up on the wrong end of a 10-5 decision at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla. on March 13. With the loss, Stevens falls to 6-4 on the season with two more games remaining on its spring trip. The Ducks led, 4-3, after seven innings but were outscored, 7-1 in the final two innings.

In a game that witnessed 29 total hits between the two teams, senior infielder Tom Phillips (Spring Lake, N.J.) paced the Ducks at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run batted in and a run scored.

Sophomore outfielder Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) picked up two hits in five at bats with two runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI. Junior infielder Michael Donovan (Mendham, N.J.) also recorded two hits in four at bats for the Ducks, while freshman infielder Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Two other Ducks tallied a hit in the loss. Graduated student infielder Matt Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and freshman outfielder Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) went 1-for-4 and 1-for-3, respectively. Glassman doubled and laid down a sacrifice bunt, while Hennelly doubled, drove in a run, scored another and walked.

Although he did not register a hit in the game, sophomore catcher Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) walked in a 0-for-3 day. More importantly, Lowenstein gunned down back-to-back runners attempting to steal a base in the 7th inning.

With two runners on base, the Engineer on second base attempted to take third, but Lowenstein put a throw right on the bag to beat the runner. Just a couple pitches later, the RPI runner on first tried to move up to second, only to be thrown out by the sophomore to end the inning.

Junior Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) threw a tremendous game for the Ducks, tossing seven-plus innings and scattered nine hits with four strikeouts. Courter allowed four earned runs and surrendered a walk in a no decision effort.

First out of the bullpen for Stevens was senior Chris Tucci (Calverton, N.Y.). Tucci gave up a hit before giving way to freshman Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) who suffered the loss. Mannello threw 1.1 innings in relief and allowed six hits and five runs (three earned).

Finally, senior John Martelle (Colonia, N.J.) threw the final two-thirds of an inning and gave up two hits and an unearned run.

The Ducks are back in action tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. against Dickinson College at Lake Myrtle Park. Stevens has one more game after tomorrow's game against SUNY Brockport at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 15.
