Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 15, 2012) – In the fourth and final game of the Florida spring trip for the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team, the Ducks lost to SUNY Brockport, 7-5. Stevens outhit Brockport, 12 to 9, but four defensive errors seemed to be the difference in the outcome of the game. The Ducks are 6-6 on the season and will travel back to Hoboken later today and prepare for a nine-inning affair with Lehman College on March 17.
The Ducks were led offensively by sophomore catcher Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and senior outfielder Ryan Kiczek (Rutherford, N.J.) who both recorded three hits in the setback. Lowenstein went 3-for-5 with a run scored and a run batted in, while Kiczek batted 3-for-4 and scored a run.
Three other Ducks picked up two hits to account for the rest of the offensive. Sophomore outfielder Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) stroked an RBI triple and scored a run as part of the 2-for-3 day at the plate with two walks. Fellow senior designated hitter TJ Alcorn (Turnersville, N.J.) singled, doubled and drove in a run in five at bats. Sophomore outfielder Shane Raymond (Easton, Pa.) was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.
Although he did not collect a hit in three at bats, freshman infielder Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.) scored a run and made three tremendous defensive plays early in the game that denied Brockport from plating a couple of runs. Nickels also laid down a sacrifice bunt.
Graduate student infielder Matt Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J.) drove in a run in four at bats on a sacrifice fly.
Earning the start on the mound for the Ducks in the game was freshman Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.). Mannello lasted 5.2 innings in a losing effort and scatted seven hits and five runs (two earned) while striking out three batters.
Senior Vincent Vinci (Howell, N.J.) was first out of the bullpen for Stevens and went one-third of an inning and a run and two walks. Senior John Martelle (Colonia, N.J.) also threw a third of an inning and gave up a run and a hit before giving way to fellow senior Chris Tucci (Calverton, N.Y.). Tucci was on the mound for the final 1.2 innings and struck out two Golden Eagles and gave up one hit.
