Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 18, 2012) – In a non-conference doubleheader at Dobbelaar Field on March 18, the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team swept the City College of New York, 13-1 and 16-3, and used three homeruns to account for 11 of the 29 total runs scored in the double dip. Senior infielder Tom Phillips (Spring Lake, N.J.) smacked a three-run shot in Game 1, and senior outfielder Ryan Kiczek (Rutherford, N.J.) and freshman infielder Pete Prontnicki (Edison, N.J.) stroked grand slams in the night cap.

Despite only recording four hits as a team in the opener, Stevens used 14 walks and three hit by pitches to score a majority of its 13 runs. The Ducks scored two runs in each of the first two innings without picking up a hit, and after plating a run in the fifth inning, the Ducks erupted for eight in the sixth to blow the game open. On the bases, the Ducks swiped 11 bags.

The three-run shot by Phillips capped off the eight-run sixth for the Ducks as part of his only hit in three at bats. Phillips walked twice in the opener, scored four runs, drove in three more and stole a school-record-tying five bases. The senior now has 62 career stolen bases which is one away from tying the third-most ever in Stevens' history. He has scored 17 runs this season to give him 110 in his four years, putting him only three away from fourth all-time.

Sophomore outfielder Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) reached base three times by way of walks in Game 1 and scored a run. Allen now has 20 walks this season and is nine away from cracking the top-five for single-season walks.

Classmate and catcher Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) drove in three runs in one official at bat in the opener. Lowenstein pushed one run home with a sacrifice fly, another with a walk and his third by a hit by pitch.

Graduate student infielder Matt Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J.) walked twice, was hit once and scored two runs, while senior designated hitter TJ Alcorn (Turnersville, N.J.) went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Alcorn also recorded a sacrifice fly.

Kiczek went 1-for-3 in Game 1 with an RBI.

Sophomore Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) started Game 1 and struck out three batters in two innings of work without surrendering a hit. Poinsett was relieved by freshman John Howarth (Fanwood, N.J.) who earned the win in 1.1 innings with two punch outs and one hit allowed. A pair of freshmen, Daniel Frischman (Short Hills, N.J.) and Casey Conroy (High Bridge, N.J.) threw the final 3.2 innings and combined to strike out five and only gave up one hit.

In the night cap, the Ducks trailed, 2-0, up until the bottom of the fourth. They plated two runs in that frame and then scored nine in the bottom of the fifth on the two grand slams by Kiczek and Prontnicki. The Ducks then crossed five more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach for the Beavers.

Prontnicki came off the bench to drive in five runs in two at bats and scored twice. Kiczek scored twice and recorded two hits to go along with his four RBI and a stolen base.

Allen walked twice more in Game 2, scored twice and drove in one with a hit in three at bats.

Sophomore infielder Michael Donovan (Mendham, N.J.) also entered the game as a pinch hitter and went 2-for-2 with two RBI, while sophomore outfielder Shane Raymond (Easton, Pa.) walked twice, scored two runs and drove in another. Raymond also swiped a bag in Game 2.

Sophomore Gary Boardman (Staten Island, N.Y.) got the nod for Game 2 and threw five innings to pick up the victory. Boardman scattered four hits and two runs (one earned) with two strike outs and one base on balls. Seniors John Martelle (Colonia, N.J.) and Vincent Vinci (Howell, N.J.) each threw an inning apiece and allowed only one hit with four combined strike outs.

The Ducks will be back in action on March 21 when they travel to the College of Staten Island for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
