Box Score FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (March 23, 2012) – Senior infielder Tom Phillips (Spring Lake, N.J.) belted an opposite field go-ahead single in the top of the seventh inning for the Stevens Institute Technology baseball team, but the hosts from Farmingdale State College plated the tying run in the bottom of the ninth and then scored another in the 10th to win, 4-3, on March 23 in Farmingdale, N.Y. Stevens is now 11-7 on the season.

Phillips led the Ducks offensively, batting 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, a run scored and the RBI in the seventh.

Stevens trailed, 2-0, entering the top of the sixth, but the Ducks started their rally with a one-out single by Phillips. He then moved up to second on a ground out by graduate student infielder Matt Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J.), and then stole third base to move 90 feet away from the plate. After a walk to sophomore outfielder Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J), senior designated hitter TJ Alcorn (Turnersville, N.J.) singled up the middle to drive in Phillips for the first run of the game.

On the RBI single by Alcorn, an error by the Farmingdale centerfielder allowed Allen to move up to third base. The next batter, freshman outfielder Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.), tied the ballgame with the third two-out single of the inning, scoring Allen.

In the seventh, freshman infielder Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.Y.) laid down a bunt single with one out and moved up to second on a ground out by sophomore catcher Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.). Phillips was next up to bat and drove Calleo in with his line drive single to left field to give the Ducks their first lead of the game.

Stevens carried its 3-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but after three singles in four at bats for the Rams, a passed ball brought the tying run across with one out. After an intentional walk was issued, a run down between home and third put two outs on the board with runners on first and second. Sophomore Gary Boardman (Staten Island, N.Y.) induced a foul out to the catcher to end the inning and force the game into extra innings.

Boardman threw four innings in relief and scattered four hits with two punch outs and an unearned run.

Allen led off with a walk, but two consecutive strike outs and a ground out ended the inning for the Ducks.

Freshman Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) entered the game in the 10th Stevens and surrendered a lead-off double. After a balk moved the Rams' runner to third, Mannello retired the next two batters with a ground out and strike out. Farmingdale then won the game with a walk-off single to center field in the next at bat.

Sophomore Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) started the game on the mound for Stevens and threw five innings in the no decision. Poinsett allowed seven hits and two runs, while striking out three and walking one.

The Ducks are off until March 27, when they take on Ramapo College at home for a 3 p.m. start. Ramapo is currently ranked No. 24 by the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 Poll.
