MAHWAH, N.J. (April 26, 2012) – Though Stevens Institute of Technology starter Kayla Berardi (Brookfield, Conn.) struck out 12 and walked just one batter, Ramapo College was able to squeeze out a 3-2 win over the Ducks on Thursday. It was the first scheduled regular-season single game in Stevens softball history.

After three scoreless innings, the Ducks found themselves trailing after Lisa Orlando (Bloomfield, N.J.) hit a one-out, two-run homer to left-centerfield for the first run of the game.

Stevens responded immediately; senior Sarah Parker (Fredricksburg, Va.) led off the fifth with a bunt single and freshman Christine Minervini (Toms River, N.J.) imitated the upperclassman and also laid down a bunt single to put the first two runners on. Lauren Hurley (Sparta, N.J.) moved them with a sacrifice bunt and Parker scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-1. Unfortunately for the Ducks they could not get the second runner home in the frame.

In the sixth, Clair Strom (El Paso, Texas) led off with an opposite-field double and came around to score on a Roadrunner error as the teams went to the final inning of regulation all tied at two.

Berardi struck out two in the seventh but could not escape a bases-loaded, two-out jam and Ramapo walked off with the 3-2 win.

Jamie DeGennaro (Pearl River, N.Y.) was the only player with two hits on Thursday for Stevens.

The Ducks will be right back in action Friday morning for a pivotal Empire 8 doubleheader with Nazareth College. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Weehawken Waterfront.
