Baseball Mounts Comeback to Trip Utica, 8-7

Box Score UTICA, N.Y. (April 7, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team rallied from four runs down through six innings to top Utica College, 8-7, in a nine-inning Empire 8 Conference showdown in Upstate New York on April 7. Stevens trailed, 6-2, entering the seventh, but scored three runs in that frame and three more in the eighth to claim the victory and improve  to 16-10 this season and 3-3 in the Empire 8.

Stevens jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning before the Pioneers plated three runs of their own in the bottom of the second to capture their first lead of the contest. Utica was scoreless in the third inning, but scored once in each of the next three frames to build its four-run cushion. The Ducks brought it back to a one-run game in the seventh with three runs and then went ahead, 8-6, after three more runs in the eighth. The Pioneers attempted to put together a comeback, but only crossed the plate once more in their final two at bats.

Five different Ducks collected two hits in the come-from-behind victory, while three others tallied one base hit.

Senior designated hitter TJ Alcorn (Turnersville, N.J.) and sophomore outfielder Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) each batted 2-for-4 with a run scored, a walk and an RBI, while sophomore infielder Michael Donovan (Mendham, N.J.) also went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a sacrifice bunt.

Freshmen Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) and Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.Y.) were also part of the 2-for-4 club in the win. Hennelly drove in a run and walked, while Calleo doubled and scored twice.

Senior infielder Tom Phillips (Spring Lake, N.J.) scored twice and drove in two more with a base hit in five at bats. Sophomore catcher Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) also collected a hit, was hit by a pitch and scored twice, while freshman outfielder Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 1-for-5 at the plate.

On the mound, senior John Martelle (Colonia, N.J.) earned the win with 3.2 innings of relief work. Martelle surrendered just two hits and an unearned run while striking out three batters. Junior Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) started the game and went 5.1 innings and allowed 12 hits and six runs.

Stevens will be back in action on Wednesday, April 11 for a 7 p.m. single game against Drew University under the lights at Dobbelaar Field.
