Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 12, 2012) – Junior righty Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) tossed a complete-game five-hitter to help push the top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team to a 3-2 win over fourth-seeded Richard Stockton College Saturday afternoon in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Metro semifinals at Dobbelaar Field. Stevens will take on second-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson University - Florham for the title. The Devils defeated Baruch College 9-3 in the other semifinal in Hoboken.
Courter was spectacular throughout, improving to 7-2 on the season with his team-high third complete game. He struck out two, walked two and recorded 17 ground-ball outs in his nine innings. The junior stranded six runners on base and allowed just five hits in the game.
Stevens pushed across its first run of the game in the second inning. Junior third baseman Michael Donovan (Mendham, N.J.) started things with a one-out walk and then stole second, eventually scoring on a run-scoring single from freshman shortstop Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.Y.).
The Ducks came through with two more runs in the fourth behind four hits. Sophomore first baseman Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and senior catcher TJ Alcorn (Turnersville, N.J.) began the inning with a pair of infield singles and Donovan followed with a base hit to drive in Allen, with senior right fielder Ryan Kiczek (Rutherford, N.J.) tallying an RBI single to center to bring in Alcorn.
The Ducks loaded the bases in the fifth inning but could not push across more insurance, and Stockton was able to score its two runs in the sixth behind a two-run homer from designated hitter Mark Asta (Jackson, N.J.).
Stevens was unable to score any insurance runs in its last three at-bats, but Courter didn't need it. He retired the side in order in the seventh, worked around a one-out single in the eighth, and did the same in the ninth.
Sophomore lefthander Adam Warburton (Sewell, N.J.) pitched well for Richard Stockton, going 7.2 innings and striking out nine. He allowed 10 hits, three runs and walked four.
Allen, Alcorn, Donovan and Kiczek all had two hits for Stevens with senior designated hitter Tom Phillips (Spring Lake, N.J.) and Calleo each recording one knock on the day.
Stevens, now 24-17, has the third most wins in program history. Sunday's ECAC Metro title game is slated to start at 2 p.m. from Dobbelaar Field in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks will be looking to avenge an early-season loss to FDU.
