Box Score
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 29, 2012) – Senior
Zach Adler (McKinney, Texas) scored the game-winning goal and assisted on the opening score of the match as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team (8-2, 3-0) took down Nazareth College in Empire 8 action on Saturday.
Curtis Stecyk (Boulder, Colo.) and
Victor Daza (North Plainfield, N.J.) also scored as the Ducks ran their Empire 8 winning streak to 18 games.
Saturday's win guarantees the Ducks of not losing or tying a conference game in over two years. The last E8 hiccup was a scoreless tie with Rochester Institute of Technology on October 2 of 2010. The last time Stevens lost a conference game was 366 days prior to that on October 1, 2009.
Stevens outshot Nazareth 21-8 on the afternoon and fired twice as many shots on goal as the Golden Flyers, 10 to five. The Stevens defense did not allow the hosts a shot until 15 minutes had already slipped off the game clock.
With the Ducks dominating play early on, Stecyk corralled a pass from Adler just outside the box and popped it over the Nazareth keeper's head for the first score of the game at 23:47.
Stevens did not let up over the next 17 minutes, keeping Naz from attempting a shot. At 40:15, Adler ripped a shot off the crossbar that caromed to
Joe Cellitti (Mendham, N.J.). The freshman turned and crossed it back to Adler who buried the second chance and made it a two-goal game at the half.
10 minutes into the second period the Ducks struck again; this time it was senior
Victor Daza converting a great centering pass from
Edward Rupp (Sayville, N.Y.) into his fifth goal of the year for Stevens.
A late penalty kick goal scored by
James Wheeler (Macclesfield, England) denied Stevens goalkeeper
Paul Killian (Ellicott City, Md.) the shutout but the Ducks earned a big 3-1 Empire 8 win.
Stevens will begin a four-game homestand on Wednesday by hosting Wilkes University at 5 p.m.
